Decks & Woodwork Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does wood splinter?

It is not unusual for wood to splinter but different types of wood have different grain patterns and densities, which make them more prone to splintering, splitting or cracking. There is no warranty/guarantee on wood.

2. How often do I need to stain or paint my deck?

Every 2 years but it really depends on the amount of shade and moisture around your woodwork. It also depends on your preference.

3. Why should I have my driveway sealed?

Asphalt driveways are made up of fine sands, stones and asphalt binder. This binder is the glue which holds this all together and provides the deep black color. Over time the binder becomes oxidized with sun exposure and different weather elements. You will notice the black begins to turn gray. The oxidization from sun exposure, exposure to harmful chemicals and household chemicals, results in cracks and deterioration. To prevent such harm to your driveway sealcoat is applied to seal out the UV rays from the sun, snow, rain and harmful chemicals. This increases the life span of your driveway and provides an appealing appearance.

4. Why do I have cracks in my driveway?

Cracks occur from moisture and harmful chemicals seeping through into the pavement’s base. When the moisture freezes and expands, the pavement will crack. Sealing your driveway will help to prevent this from occurring. However, if you do have a crack in your driveway, we can apply crack and joint sealant before sealcoating. It will remain visible, however will prevent further damage.

5. Can you remove oil stains from my driveway?

If you have oil stains on your driveway, we would apply an oil spot primer. This is brushed onto the stain prior to sealing to prevent the oil from eating through the new sealcoating. Not all stains can be removed completely, however, most oil stains will be removed with this tactic.

6. How should I prepare for my driveway sealing?

As a customer, all we ask is for you to clear your driveway of any large items, vehicles, dumpsters, and equipment. We will clean the driveway prior to sealing. We also offer power cleaning for an additional charge if you would like to have this service.

7. What time of the year is best to do driveway sealing?

It is important for the overnight temperature outside to be about 55 degrees when sealing. For this reason, we perform driveway sealing in the fall season.

8. If sealing gets on to my grass, will it cause harm?

Occasionally sealcoat could overspray slightly onto the lawn. The sealer will not harm the grass; a mowing will get rid of the sealer.

9. Why does the edging of my driveway seem to not be sealed?

Our company does its best to be as neat as possible and avoid over spraying. In order to do so, we coat the edges of your driveway by hand. This is particularly important around walls and garage doors. Overtime the sealing will even out and become uniform and the difference will no longer be noticeable.
