This month’s Plant of the Month is the Ilex Crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ Japanese Holly. This wonderful plant provides a variety of options for use. Whether you are looking to create a beautiful border or accent a particular area by using it as a focal point plant, it is a great addition to any landscape. It has a high tolerance for a wide range of soil types from dry, moist and even clay or sand. A four petaled white flower blooms from May to June and pollinated female plants produce a small black rounded fruit which matures in the fall. It gets its name “Sky Pencil” from its upwardly thinning narrow shape. This shrub can grow up to 10’ tall and only about 3’ wide.
